The 2008 Ira Templeton Chattanooga Open got underway today at Creeks Bend Golf Club in Hixson, TN.
First to play in the morning were the three senior divisions. PGA Professional Randy Helton of Stones River Country Club in Murfreesboro is the first round leader of the Senior Overall and Senior Professional divisions after firing a 4-under-par 66, but ten seniors are lurking within 4 strokes. Doug Harris, Gary Pettit, and Neil Spitalny shot rounds of 68 to sit atop the leader board in the Senior Amateur division. In all, eleven out of the twenty-eight seniors finished at even par or better for the day.
After a one hour weather delay the regular divisions were able to complete their rounds. PGA Pro Bruce Etter of Chattanooga Golf & Country Club leads the Regular Professional division after posting a first round 66, while Todd Burgan and John Maupin share the Regular Amateur lead at 3-under-par 67 and are just one back of the Overall Regular Division lead.
A total of 80 players competed in the first round on a hot day that featured a strong midday thunderstorm. Look for a battle atop the leader board in the second and final round.
